      MAPPING NIGERIA FROM TURKEY ON WORLD HUMANITARIAN DAY

      Interested in a career in the humanitarian field? Feel like contributing to NGOs?on World Humanitarian Day but not sure how you can help??Map to support field staff on World Humanitarian Day! (TR)

      As part of the Missing Maps project,?Médecins Sans Frontières?(MSF) and?The?Humanitarian?OpenStreetMap Team?(HOT) invite?you to participate in a?mapping?event on Saturday, August 19, from 14:00 to 17:00 at Tasar?m At?lyesi Kad?k?y.

      MSF, with support from HOT and Tasar?m At?lyesi Kad?k?y, is organising third Missing Maps Mapathon – but coming to Kad?k?y for the first time!

      On World Humanitarian Day, we’ll come together as dedicated mappers, humanitarians, MSF friends, and supporters in Istanbul in order to hear from humanitarian workers firsthand and contribute to the medical and humanitarian work of our teams in the field. We will be remotely mapping?parts of the world's most remote locations?in OSM's Tasking Manager to facilitate the provision of urgent humanitarian assistance by MSF and other humanitarian aid organisations.

      By joining us on August 19, you will help map areas where humanitarian organisations are meeting the needs of vulnerable people. With your help,?we can bring medical and humanitarian aid to where it's needed most!

      Please note that the maximum number of participants will be limited to?50 people.

      * PLEASE NOTE THAT THE EVENT WILL BE HELD IN ENGLISH DUE TO THE VARIETY OF PARTICIPANTS AND THE LANGUAGE USED IN THE MAPPING PLATFORM WE WILL BE WORKING ON. BASIC KNOWLEDGE AND UNDERSTANDING OF ENGLISH IS NECESSARY.

      *Note:?If you’re already familiar with iD Editor, you can skip the presentation and start mapping with experienced participants directly.

      Important Reminders

      • Please note that the event will be held in English due to the language used in the mapping platform we will be working on. Basic knowledge and understanding of English is necessary.
      • You need to bring?your own laptop (preferably fully charged), as we cannot provide one for each participant. Mouse is also recommended to facilitate mapping.

      What is a Missing Maps Mapathon?

      The aim of the Missing Maps Project is to map the most crisis-prone parts of the developing world. With your help, we can directly improve the lives of some of the world's most vulnerable people. Both beginners and experienced mappers are welcome to join this Mapathon.

      Founded by MSF, the Red Cross, and HOT, Missing Maps is powered by volunteers around the world and in local communities who map underserved regions?in order to provide international and local NGOs and individuals with maps and geographic data to better respond to crises. Using the?OpenStreetMap?(OSM) platform ensures all data gathered is free, open, and available for use under an open license.

      What do I need for the event?

      Just a laptop (you must bring your own with you), a mouse (recommended), and your enthusiasm for voluntary humanitarian support!

      What do I have to do now?

      Register for the event and become one of 50 participants.?If you want to help the organisers on a voluntary basis during the event, either by providing validation of mapping activities or general support, please get in touch with us at?bilgi@istanbul.msf.org. If you cannot participate in this Mapathon but would like to take part in the next one, please contact us at the same email. We’ll definitely have more Mapathons in the future!

      Do I need to be an experienced mapper to join the Mapathon??

      No. A basic mapping training will be conducted at the beginning of the event for first-timers. We will also be working on a simple task, which will not require high skills of mapping. Both beginners and experienced mappers are welcome to join.?If you are already familiar with iD Editor and/or JOSM, you can skip the informative presentation and start mapping.

      Which part of the world will be mapped?

      We will be mapping Niger State, Nigeria for this Mapathon due to the urgent need from the field.
